Moulay Ali Cherif
Moulay Ali Cherif, also known as Ali Cherif, was the founder of the Alaouite dynasty, which ruled Morocco from 1666 to 1957. He was born in 1587 in Sijilmasa, a caravan town in the Sahara Desert. His father was a descendant of Hassan ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. Moulay Ali Cherif began his political career in the early 1600s, when he became the leader of the Zaouia of Tafilalt, a religious brotherhood in the Tafilalt region of Morocco. In 1631, he was proclaimed sultan of Morocco by the people of Tafilalt.
Moulay Ali Cherif was a skilled politician and military leader. He was able to unite Morocco under his rule and to defeat the Portuguese, who had been a major power in the country. He also promoted trade and agriculture and built many mosques and schools. Moulay Ali Cherif died in 1659. He was succeeded by his son, Moulay Rachid. The Alaouite dynasty ruled Morocco for over three centuries and is still the ruling dynasty today.
